Some News and some Downloads

Downloads will be hosted by box.net and will be available at the bottom of destinydesignlab.wordpress.com

Ok everyone its been awhile since you heard from me (DIGITAL MANIAC) or my buddy SARGE HAVOC.  Well that’s because we’ve been having some issues with work, school, and personal life.  Today I want to announce that I am releasing a kit to help all of you IT professionals remove pesky viruses off of Windows 7.  You can run this tool and get instant access into the System account on Windows 7, and possibly Windows Vista.  This tool uses the PsTools software from Sysinternals (Who was bought by Microsoft.) This is 100% safe, and all you have to do is disable User Account Control, or right click PSexec.exe and set it to run as administrator.  After you do that just run the RUN ME.bat file, and you should be in the system account.  I am also releasing a folder full of icons.  Every thing I release will have a direct download link, and some will have a .torrent file.  If you want to download the .torrent file to save me some bandwith on my storage, or for quicker speeds, you will need a Bittorrent client.  I personally recommend µTorrent, or the portable version here.  For more information on portable apps you can check out here, or here.  I will also include the steps to enter the system account on Windows XP if you download the System account files for Windows 7.  I am planning to provide a mirror for Windows 7 Logon Changer.  Using this you can change your logon screen to any image under 256 KB larger.  The great thing about this is that you can always change your logon screen back to normal, the steps will be at the bottom of this post.  That is just a few of the goodies that are available for download, with more to come over the next few weeks.  Now I am going to relist all of the above things so you know what you can download.

Windows 7 Logon Screen Changer (.zip)

IconPack 1 (Zip and Torrent)

Game Design Resources (Zip)

RBG Hex code color sheet (PDF)

Quest of Discovery (Zip) < Minor sound change

System Account (Zip)

Black and White Icons (Zip)

Hidden Control Panel (Windows 7 God Mode, [Folder])

Midi Resource Pack (Zip)

Windows 7 Logon Changer (Zip)

The Hidden Control Panel, or GodMode, is a special shortcut that opens the control panel, with every action listed.  If you need to do something that’s hard to find in the control panel, just open the Hidden Control Panel, and voila you now have easy access to it.

HOW TO CHANGE LOGON SCREEN BACK TO NORMAL

1)      Run the program again

2)      browse and select Windows – System32 – oobe – info – backgrounds

3)      then select the default image. (backgroundDefault.jpg)

As always this is Digital Maniac out, There WILL be more downloads coming soon.

CrimeCraft Review

Alright its been way to long since I gave you all a post of any kind to read.  Now I plan to attempt to make it up to you.  For this post I plan to review an MMO that I just started playing.  The name of the game is CrimeCraft, and it’s a Persistent World Next-gen Shooter (PWNS) that seamlessly blends gripping, action-packed shootouts with the irresistible community and role-playing elements exclusive to today’s hottest massively multiplayer games.

CrimeCraft is set in a gritty fictional city of the near future, following an ecological disaster of unprecedented scale, where the price of life is cheap, and loyalty far less valuable than one’s reputation. Join thousands of players online as you learn the rules of the street, build a gang of stone-cold killers and do whatever it takes to survive amidst the chaos of a world turned upside down.

HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY FEATURES:

  • Interact with thousands of rival gang bangers in gorgeous bustling lobbies, picking up “jobs” and “missions” to gain experience and money, plot strategy, barter and trade, resupply and refit – then enter the fray in fast-paced 8-vs-8 tactical action in 7 distinct PvP and PvE multiplayer modes across 14 gritty environments.
  • Take clan-based multiplayer to new levels – join a gang, recruit members, pool resources, outfit your gang crib, compete in gang-only tournaments and establish “street cred” for your crew based on individual and team-based dominance in battle.
  • Experience an underground economy that thrives with peddlers of fictional and real word fashion label apparel, banks, arms vendors and boost dealers – as well as other players hustling to exploit the system for their own advancement.
  • Customize your own thug to stand out from the masses, using a nearly endless variety of clothing, weapons, items and skills.
  • Advance through 50 levels and use over 40 unique passive and active skills to craft your vision of the ultimate street enforcer.
  • Use the loot gained from battle to upgrade and repair items – or craft and customize weapons, attachments, clothing and performance-enhancing supplements and boosts.

In playing just the first two little tutorial-like missions I had a blast.  I personally get tired of constantly playing as a knight, warrior, mage, ect.  I really enjoyed the first person shooter aspect of this game, and look forward to getting more in-depth into it.  I will definitely write a better review as soon as I get some more time in on the game. Look for some nice screenshots to follow, and feel free to check out www.crimecraft.com for more information on this game.  I will host the LEGITIMATE torrent, as soon as I find a place that will allow me to upload it.  The download is 4.5Gb large, and they offer three ways to download it.  You can download it from two sites, or use the .torrent file.  If you plan to use the .torrent file you will definitely need a program like micro-torrent.

Crazy Life

Life

Life is so wonderfully crazy sometimes.  Today I am going to give a little insight into what my life is like and how it can be wonderfully crazy.  At the end, I want to welcome all comments and questions.  Consider this a get to know the author of a small indie game company/blogger a little better post.  Anyway let me get onto the post/rant thing.

My life is very similar to most nineteen year olds, except for the fact that instead of going to school I work 40+ hours of work, then blog on the side.  I still do all the things teenagers do, though I gave up the life of partying nonstop a few years ago.  I still spend time with friends, and I am in the process of attempting to get me a nice girlfriend.  Although that seems to be the crazy part of my life anymore.  I have been talking to this girl for over a year now, and due to extraneous circumstance I have just recently started trying to go out with her.  She just got out of a rocky relationship, and now her ex who constantly screws up every relationship he happens to be in, keeps on calling/texting her.  Every time they date, he winds up cheating on her, my question to all of my dear readers is, “Should I try to get him to quit contacting her, or should I maybe just go ahead and ask her to a date?”  Keep in mind that I really do like this girl as a friend, and I want whatever makes her happy.  I know I didn’t give you much to go on, but that’s all I can say without making it obvious to any of my local readers, who I am talking about.

Anyways, let us talk about me for a little bit.  This post will serve as a small “About Me” post until I get the about me page up and rolling.  My name is Michael, but I answer to Michael, Mike, Mickey, Ward, Maniac, or Digital Maniac.  On most online games/forums I use my company name “DestinyDesignLabs”, 11011011, or Digital Maniac as my nickname.  I am a nineteen year old male who enjoys playing games, posting random blog posts, creating my own games, and hanging out with friends, I am a liberal person with anything, I am liberal with the posts I make, and liberal in the content in some of my games.  I hope to never cause anyone offense, but at times I may do that on accident.  If that happens, feel free to leave me an email or post explaining how I offended you and I will attempt to rectify the situation.  I am a big fan of spell check and grammar check in my word processors.  I enjoy to fish and golf.  Now let’s delve a little into my background.  I grew up in a small town in the panhandle of Florida.  I was born into a low-middle class family, who sometimes struggled to make the bills.  I can never say that I went hungry, but I can say that respect anyone who works to support their family to the best of their abilities.  I started working construction with my dad in his company at fifteen, while still going to school.  After I finished school and the recession hit, I had to look for a different profession.  I finally found a job as a technician at a computer repair shop in my hometown, where I currently work.  I decided right before I started here that I wanted to start making games and websites, which is how I began my indie game company with Sarge Havoc.  I am planning on competing in as many small online game making competitions as often as circumstances allow.  I hope to eventually go into game design full time, but I do have some back-up plans just incase.  I try to stay as up to date about technology break-through as possible, and that’s why most of my posts will be technology oriented.  I don’t really have a certain audience that I attempt to appeal to, though I do my best to make sure that my posts are at least PG-13.

Now I am going to quickly go over some of the things that get on my nerves.  I hate people who take offense at unoffending material, I find it extremely hard to deal with people who spam the comments of a post with irrelevant materials I mean at least spam it with somewhat relevant material.  I also dislike it when people constantly criticize/make fun of people for the way they dress, the way they talk, their sexuality, their choice of music, and the line of work they do.  I have many friends who are far from this society’s standard of perfect, but they are all fun to be around.  I want to challenge my readers to give these people a second chance, they are human too.  They deserve to be treated fairly, just like you and me.  Another thing I dislike is someone who likes to start fights.  I know these things probably get on most peoples nerves, but these are some of the things that really get me raging in a short period of time.  I will attempt to have the about me page up soon, but until then, I want everyone who has a question to post it in the comments.  I do want to state that all reasonable questions will be answered, but if I believe your question/comment is spam then I reserve the right to delete/edit it.  Not only can you post your questions for me here, but you can feel free to also post your comments on this post here.  Have a good stay here, and don’t forget you can check of my game design blog here, or you can follow me on Twitter here.  You can also get a message to me by emailing me here.  You can also find me on the large game design chat-rooms from time to time.  Till the next post, this is Digital Maniac out.

Free Downloads!

I have been promising a blog post for a while now, and I think that its time to keep that promise.  Today its going to be short, sweet, and to the point.  Today I want to announce locations where you can download numerous amounts of free stuff.  I personally will be hosting free items related to game design, or making your desktop look nicer.  Let me first describe a few items that I will be hosting for download here, or on my other blog.  If you go to my other blog, and scroll to the bottom of the page you will see what items are available for download.  These will be changed occasionally, whereas the other link will have all of the downloadable files on it.  I currently have my game, Quest of Discovery, a hex-color chart for you website designers, a new set of icons, and small set of backgrounds.  If you want to take a sneak-peak at what the icons look like in action, continue to read this article, a picture will follow. The icons are also available in a white variant, though the picture only shows the black variation.  I will also be putting some collections of free for personal use fonts up.

Humanity in Perspective

Before your eyes grace my inadequete thoughts, I would like to appologize for my abscence. Life is the curious thing, truly, and more so in how it tends to keep you busy. I would also issue warning to those who are prone to over-thinking, as these are almost sure to raise thoughts, and stir opinions. That said, read at your own risk as I suspect greatly these thoughts will leave some form of imprint upon your minds.

Humanity, a masterful race, one that has conquered seemingly everything in it’s domain. The land produces fertile crops at a rate and quality perhaps thought impossible ages ago. We have tantalized the ear with such sweet musical creations. We soar across the skies, as our ancestors once fantasized of doing. We reach the depths of the sea, to swim amongst wonders thought only to exist in our minds. We have touched the moon with our feet, and reached the heights of the stars.  Humanity has come far, in it’s so infantile existance. But have we really?

While great strides have been made in the pursuits of achieving a higher standard of living, we’ve also generated more than enough suffering to offset such great claims. We’ve killed ourselves since the dawn of time, and perhaps even before then. We have broken rocks across our skulls. Run each other through upon steel. Utilized cannon, and rifle to massacre each other. Bathed ourselves in nuclear fire. And in the future, perhaps even more atrocities. Humanity, may be a great creation, be it of science, or the incorporeal powers that be, but it is also a very dangerous and tragic one.  Humanity is a violent, impulsive and ‘bratty’ race. We want, we take, we destroy, and we care nothing of the consequences. In pondering over what I believe to be a masterpiece of anime ‘Blue Submarine No.6’ and several creative writings belonging to people I am priviledged to call my freinds, I have often wondered. If Humanity shared this Earth, with another, or several other sentient beings capable of defending themselves from us. Co-existing with us. Would we still be so ‘ignorant’?

The answer cannot be found in one man, or any other, until the time comes that such a co-existance be made possible. To which I doubt will occur in my lifetime. However, I will concede defeat upon Humanity’s part, in such a challenge. A greedy selfish race we are, in the deepest recesses of our hearts. Driven to such atrocities as rape, robbery, murder (Regardless of cause or reason. Even war, is only ‘justified’ murder.). If another species were to occupy the ground on which we walk. Nothing would change. People would still exist in poverty, racism would still pervade our minds, violence would still haunt our minds and bodies, and Humanity, will still seek to prove itself superior to every other thing on the planet (and at such time, perhaps beyond.). Africa, children starve to death daily, without having enough of anything to meet even the most basic of needs. Women are beaten and raped. Men die fighting for survival. Disease runs rampant. And guess what? I bet the majority of the people scanning this passage, even gave a damn. Why? Because we have what they don’t, take it for granted, and still have the gaul to say ‘I want more’. Me, me, me, take, take, take. This is the case with almost every single being on Earth. This philosphy would not change if another intelligent species shared bread with us. It would merely expand it’s grasp. Humanity, for all of it’s greatness. Is still nothing more than a speck of dust upon a pile of mud.

I’m certain several people will disagree with me. Perhaps in anger, or understanding. It doesn’t matter. These beliefs are my own, and shall never be altered by outside intervention. We are flawed. Regardless of if it was because Adam and Eve bit at the flesh of that accursed fruit of the tree of knowledge, or because it was imprinted upon our DNA at the begining of our species. I want you to see it like that for a moment, imagine your on the outside, looking in, for lack of a better analogy. Imagine that you are another species, one that has surpassed the need for violence, one that can observe us. What would you say? How would you compare Humanity to yourself?  People have asked me before, why do you think Aliens have not come before us before? Because we aren’t ready. Humanity might feign happiness, brotherhood, and peace. But for only so long. The general populace of Earth would just leech upon them and spread the disease of our tragic stigma that is greed. I’m fairly sure that if such species of life exist, that can observe us, and have been. That is exactly how they see us. An un-unified group of ‘apes’ still fighting amongst ourselves for crude oil, depleting the world of what never was ours to begin with. Selling it to each other to fill our pockets with money, that truly, would have no value anywhere else but here, and only because we say it represents something. A group of unintelligent misifts, that still battle the ravages of hunger. That still induldges itself with such sins that I cannot even begin to count. (Not to confuse my use of the word sin, with those termed in the bible. Mine is on a far broader scale.)

Ask yourself. Is Humanity, really as great as it lays claim?

Ludum Dare In Just Three Days and Seven Hours

As some of my followers on twitter noticed, I made a remark about competing in the Ludum Dare Competition.  Today I am going to give a small post about what Ludum Dare is.  Ludum Dare is a game making competition, where competitors have just forty-eight hours to create a game.  They must work solo, and have to include the source code.  There is a separate competition in which participants can compete with a seventy-two hour deadline, and they are allowed to use a team.  This year I plan to enter the Ludum Dare Jam which means that I will have seventy-two hours to create a game based on a theme that is chosen at the start of the competition.  For this competition I will be having Sarge Havoc come up for the weekend.  I will attempt to make him post a blog, while I catch catnaps, but no guarantees.  Now let me steal a quote directly for the Ludum Dare website.

Ludum Dare is a regular accelerated game development Event. Participants develop games from scratch in a weekend, based on a theme suggested by community.

Ludum Dare was founded by Geoff Howland, and held it’s first competition in April of 2002. Since then the community has run more than 18 regular Events, dozens of practice competitions, collectively creating thousands of games in just a weekend each.

The event attracts developers from all sides of the industry. Students, hobbyists, industry professionals from many well respected game studios, as well as many independent game developers.

For many people, it can be difficult to find or make the time create a game or prototype for yourself. We’re here to be your excuse.

Over the next few sentences, I will inform you all how to join and post the rules here as well.  You can join by going to their website and creating an account.  All you have to do after you join is wait for the theme to be decided, and then you can start.  After you get the game finished in the time limit, you get to upload it to the site.

Competition Rules and Eligibility

Ludum Dare Competition rules are stricter than the Jam rules. This is to encourage a fairer playing field for participants. The core rules are:
You must work alone (solo).
All game code and content must be created within the 48 hours. **
Games must be based on the theme.
All libraries, middleware, content creation, and development tools are allowed.
Source code must be included.

The code from a game written in 48 hours isn’t likely to contain anything super top-secret, which is why we ask you to include it. Instructions for using or compiling the code is not required; It’s mainly a formality in case we need to deal with disqualifications. This does not mean open source, just included source. You retain all rights to it. If you do not wish to provide source, consider entering the Jam instead.

Jam Rules

The Jam is our new “relaxed rules” Ludum Dare event. It takes place concurrently with the Ludum Dare Competition, but goes a little longer. To contrast the competition, here are the equivalent 5 rules:
You can work alone or in a team.
Create a game in 72 hours.
Games should be based on the theme.
All libraries, middleware, content creation, and development tools are allowed.
Source code is not required.

Jam entries are not judged, but as a participant in the Jam, you allowed to judge games in the competition.

If you’re working in a team, pick one member to submit and represent your game. No matter the number team members, each game is only worth 1 participant. If other team members wish to help out with the judging, ask them to play and rate other entries on your behalf.

I hope everyone wishes me the best of luck and I hope to pay more attention to the blog in the very near future.  You can always follow me on Twitter by following @mikeward2534.  This is Digital Maniac out.

Gangland

Everyone loves games that involve gangs and mafioso, well I plan on adding another game to that endless list of titles.  I am announcing that a new game, for now being called “Gangland”, is in the works.  This game is going to be very similar in gameplay style to the Mafia Wars game on Facebook.  I am currently looking for someone experienced in Game Editor, a music composer, and game writer if anyone is interested.  I can be reached at destinydesignlabs@hotmail.com with the title Gangland.  I hope to be able to offer a little pay, but as it stands right now I plan to launch it as Freeware, under the GNU license.  Anyways, if anyone is interested feel free to email me at the above address.

If anyone is interested in following along with the developements, feel free to check out www.destinydesignlab.wordpress.com.  That is the sister blog to this one, and the blog where I plan to post more indepth descriptions, screenshots, and information about the games that I have in the works.

This is Digital Maniac, out.

Laptop usage may reduce sperm.

Yes you read that title correctly, according to a study in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility states that men who use their laptop on, well, their laps, could be affecting their sperm quality. That statement is taken from Reuters. Reuters also goes on to say:

“In the study, thermometers were used to measure the temperature of the scrotums of 29 young men balancing a laptop on their knees. Even with a lap pad under the computer, the men’s scrotums overheated quickly.”

Yelim Sheynkin, a urologist at the State University of New York at Stony Brook who led the study published in Fertility and Sterility is quoted as saying, “Millions and millions of men are using laptops now, especially those in the reproductive age range. Within 10 or 15 minutes their scrotal temperature is already above what we consider safe, but they don’t feel it.”
Sheynkin also goes on to state that just raising the temperature of the scrotum one degree Celsius is all that it takes to cause damage to sperm. After one hour holding a laptop on your lap, can raise the scrotal temperature 2.5 degrees Celsius.

“I wouldn’t say that if someone starts to use laptops they will become infertile,” Sheynkin told Reuters Health, though he warned that frequent use might contribute to reproductive problems because “the scrotum doesn’t have time to cool down.”

When the men sat with their legs spread wide — made possible only by placing the computer on a large lap pad — they could keep their testicles cooler. But it still took less than 30 minutes before they began overheating.

“No matter what you do, even with the legs spread wide apart, the temperature is still going to be higher than what we call safe,” said Sheynkin.

I will attempt to keep you all informed of new updates about the study, until then this is Digital Maniac.
